Sally's STORY
Visitor/Administration Manager – Lincolnshire Energy from Waste
FCC
Sally is interested in environmental sustainability and making a difference where possible, particularly through education and/or inspiring others to take an interest too.
FCC Environment is driven to create a more sustainable, better future – for our communities, our planet, and future generations.
Whether it’s thinking outside the box to turn waste into resources, engineering ideas that change the way things get done or dreaming up a scientific formula that cracks a problem wide open, a career with FCC allows you to turn imagination into climate action.
We spoke to some of our recent Graduate Trainees to ask them why they joined the business and how they are finding their first few months working in the environmental sector.
What do you do and where do you do it?
Visitor/Administration Manager – Lincolnshire Energy from Waste
What is your role and why is it important?
Audit preparation and compliance, maintain and update management systems, oversee document reviews, training, medicals, timekeeping and absences, delivering the education programme and other educational events on behalf of our client, Lincolnshire County Council.
My role plays an important part in ensuring overall site health and safety and compliance alongside demonstrating and delivering corporate social responsibility activities which provides the company with a competitive edge and helps to stand out as an industry leader. Delivering the education programme also provides a platform to educate all ages and address the skill shortages within our industry, encouraging interest in apprenticeships and graduate programmes.
Which parts of the job do you enjoy most/ find most rewarding?
I enjoy all aspects of my varied and extensive workload. I am stimulated by how different my work days are, and this mostly presents fresh challenges. I am also currently completing a Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CDMA) which has been so helpful in my understanding of the wider business and includes operational strategy, sales and marketing, project management, human resources management and other leadership capabilities.
What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?
So some qualifications I already had applicable before joining FCC but I met the general manager whilst I was in another role and knew the project manager who led the installation of the turbine here and he recommended me for the position based on my qualifications at that time, once employed by FCC I went to uni to further develop my skill set for the role, and now I am back at uni again to get my degree.
What did you do before?
Project/Administration Manager for Facilities
What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector? Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?
I am very interested in environmental sustainability and making a difference where possible, particularly through education and/or inspiring others to take an interest too.
What are you most passionate about?
My family, our health and, with a positive outlook and making small differences wherever possible, strive towards a bright future for them and maybe inspire others to do the same. Life is too short!
What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?
I have received a lot of training and development and am currently enjoying completing the CMDA. I will always look for the next training opportunity to learn and progress in my career, although currently I am not sure what the next step might be.
What does an average day consist of?
My day can include an educational visit from a school, college or general public, working to update and maintain the management systems, organising training/medicals, checking document reviews, and organising events such as open day and site celebrations.
Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?
Yes, because I generally get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction from what I do, my days can be busy but I prefer that!
