Burns & McDonnell

Burns & McDonnell are a major Engineering-led EPC business, with our parent company based in the United States with over 100 years’ experience of providing engineering services in the electrical power Transmission and Distribution (T&D) sector.

Burns & McDonnell brings together over 13,000 engineers, construction and craft professionals and architects globally to design and build critical infrastructure across sectors,  With an integrated EPC construction and engineering design mindset, we offer full-service capabilities.  Here in the UK, we established the Transmission business in 2017 to serve the UK market and we have gone from strength to strength, securing EPC Substation frameworks with National Grid and Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks (Transmission).

We are bringing a different approach to the UK market.  We are an integrator, undertaking the engineering and project management in-house including all on-site management and control, and utilise our supply chain partners to execute the physical site works. This enables the best companies in the sector to deliver for clients with our project and programme management support. We are engineering led, solving challenges and designing better solutions, using digital solutions where appropriate to improve the way projects are delivered. We are a Constructor, managing risk and delivering turnkey EPC outcomes, using technology and partners capabilities. This is a proven model for us and brings flexibility and value to ourselves and our clients.

We are equally comfortable undertaking feasibility, front end engineering design (FEED), concept design and detailed engineering design as a stand-alone service. We have frameworks in place to deliver these services with Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, SSE and SP Energy Networks.

Our comprehensive in-house engineering capabilities include:

  • Complete substation detailed design, including, HV electrical engineering, M&E engineering, and civil/structural engineering.
  • Cable network detailed design/analysis and procurement specification
  • Protection scheme design (selectivity study) and co-ordination, including production of relay protection settings and associated pre-requisite power systems studies (fault level and power flow analysis).
  • Earthing system studies and detailed design
  • Power quality and utility network compliance studies (G5/4 and P28/P29).
  • Arc flash analysis.
  • Factory and Site Acceptance tests

We are here for the long-term, starting small and growing, delivering upon our mission to Make our Clients Successful.
