Elizabeth works as a Network Analyst contributing to the optimisation of the gas network infrastructure (NTS) that provides safe and reliable gas supply to millions across the UK.
Why is your role important? Why is it important to the company/ the people of the UK/ the UK economy?
My role is vital because I contribute to the optimisation of the gas network infrastructure (NTS) that provides safe and reliable gas supply to millions across the UK. This not only supports National Gas’s mission to provide consistent and secure energy supply, but plays a vital role in powering homes, businesses, and industries, which are essential to the country’s economy.
Which parts of the job do you enjoy most / find most rewarding?
The aspect of my role that I find the most rewarding is the opportunity to contribute to sustainable energy solutions. The problem solving involved in analysing network data and ensuring efficiency in gas delivery provides a sense of fulfilment. Additionally, the collaborative environment where everyone offers a listening ear and clear communication thrives, is something I really like.
What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?
I applied to my present position as I completed my master’s degree. My background in chemical engineering and advanced studies in industry 4.0 and big data provided me with essential skills needed to analyse and optimise industrial systems. Additionally, I had prior hands-on experience from previous roles.
What did you do before?
Before joining National Gas, I studied at the University of Birmingham for an MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering, and prior to that, I worked as a Quality Control Analyst.
What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?
I was drawn to the energy and utility sector due to its critical role in powering the society. A project where I once worked on at a Shea refinery taught me about the importance of efficient connections in powering systems, sparking interest in contributing to the progress of the energy industry. National gas’s commitment to safe and reliable gas network resonated with that, so I joined.
Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?
My position as a Network Analysts at National Gas is more satisfying because it allows me to apply both my academic background and practical experience in a way that directly impacts society. I have the opportunity to work with software, such as SIMONE, to optimise gas delivery, which excites me, and it offers continuous learning and professional growth.
What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?
The career prospects in this role are highly promising, especially with the industry’s focus on innovation and sustainability. With my role in gas network analysis, I see opportunities for growth in areas such as data analytics, process optimization and energy management, all of which will be increasingly valuable in the future. I have received training on network analysis, capability and process optimisation.
What does an average day consist of?
An average day consists of working in-person at the office or from home. I attend weekly team meetings, one-to-one with my manager, training, analysing data and computing reports of projects I am working on. There are also occasionally opportunities to visit compressor sites, which are important assets to the gas network, to gain practical understanding of how they function under real world conditions.
