James is a Project Manager managing major asset renewal projects.

What do you do, and where do you do it?

I’m a Project Manager at National Gas, working at the Bacton Gas Terminal on the Norfolk coast, managing major asset renewal projects. The terminal is a critical to the UK’s energy network, supplying gas that powers homes and businesses in the UK.

Why is your role important? Why is it important to the company/ the people of the UK/ the UK economy?

The Bacton Gas Terminal plays a vital role in the UK’s energy supply, processing a significant portion of natural gas that flows into the country. My role is to ensure that the terminal remains safe and fit for purpose to keep homes warm, businesses running and industries powered.

Which parts of the job do you enjoy most / find most rewarding?

I love working as part of a team, especially when we solve challenges and deliver meaningful change. There’s a real sense of pride in seeing a project through from start to finish, knowing that my efforts have contributed something tangible and impactful for a critical part of the UK’s infrastructure.

What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?

After finishing school, I started a Project Management Apprenticeship. As part of this, I achieved my APM Project Management Qualification and developed a portfolio off work that demonstrated my experience and competency. By building this foundation, I was able to advance my career, applying the knowledge and skills I gained in more complex and challenging roles.

What did you do before?

Before joining National Gas, I had the opportunity to work in London for Turner & Townsend as a Project Manager. As part of this role, I gained experience working for a consultancy company delivering high standards for our clients. Prior to this I worked for National Highways where I started my career working on flagship projects such as the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Scheme and the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet Scheme.

What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?

The energy sector appealed to me because of its importance to everyday life. Knowing I could contribute to ensuring people have reliable access to energy and working on projects that make a real difference. It’s a dynamic sector that has challenges that keep me engaged and motivated.

Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?

What makes this role rewarding is knowing the work I do has a real impact. I help deliver a part in keeping the UK’s gas supply secure allowing people to operate normally day to day without even noticing! I love being able to take ownership of projects, solve challenges and see the results of my work make a difference.

What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?

The career prospects are good. As a new starter I’ve already seen how committed National Gas is to invest in its people. There’s plenty of training and development on offer, and it’s clear everyone wants you to develop and succeed.

What does an average day consist of?

Most days involve being at the terminal, having discussions with the team and keeping track of progress. It’s been great settling in and being involved with the delivery of work.

Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?

Yes, definitely! It’s a rewarding job where you feel supported, especially as a new starter. You can see the impact of the work and the opportunities for growth and development.
