The in-house training, great progression and development opportunities attracted Joe away from his office job to embark upon his apprenticeship at United Utilities.

Why is your role important?

My role is pivotal as I ensure that the wastewater network is constantly maintained, working effectively and efficiently to provide the best service to our customers.

As an apprentice, my role is important to the company as we have an ageing workforce, so it is vital that apprentice engineers are trained and upskilled to be the workforce of the future.

Engineering is also a fundamental aspect of our business, so it’s beneficial for roles to be fulfilled with home-grown talent. We provide a seamless service to seven million customers across the North West to allow the economy to have clean, clear drinking water and their waste is removed effectively and environmentally friendly.

Which parts of the job do you find most rewarding?

The aspect of my job I enjoy the most is the excitement of not knowing what I’m going to be doing, day in day out. Anything can break down, or need fixing at any given time, therefore there’s an element of unpredictability – you never know what you are going to be doing. The thing I find most rewarding is completing a challenging job, or a project that has been assigned to me specifically, as you feel a real sense of pride and achievement knowing you’ve made a difference.

What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?

The career prospects and development opportunities both at United Utilities and as an apprentice are fantastic. Through my apprenticeship I have received in-house training and I’m encouraged to progress as much as possible. I have discussed the prospect of continuing education after I finish college this year and enhancing my qualifications. Once I have completed my scheme, I am then going to see what opportunities arise for me to progress in the future.
