Joseph's STORY
Apprentice Training Administrator
FCC
Joseph is an Apprentice Training Administrator who works in the head office in Doncaster, which is where he is from.
FCC Environment is driven to create a more sustainable, better future – for our communities, our planet, and future generations.
Whether it’s thinking outside the box to turn waste into resources, engineering ideas that change the way things get done or dreaming up a scientific formula that cracks a problem wide open, a career with FCC allows you to turn imagination into climate action.
We spoke to some of our recent Graduate Trainees to ask them why they joined the business and how they are finding their first few months working in the environmental sector.
What do you do and where do you do it?
I am an Apprentice Training Administrator and travel to the head office in Doncaster, which is where I am from.
Why is your role important?
My role is important as when we make training available to those in the business there is a cost to that. Making sure that the cost of these courses and the delegates on them are recorded correctly, ensures the company’s budget is correct, meaning the company can use their budget effectively knowing that it is all correct.
Which parts of the job do you enjoy most/ find most rewarding?
I find the most rewarding thing in my role is when someone comes to you with a query regarding their training account or another question regarding the business, I go off and do my research, then come back to them with an answer. The responses I get back make me smile as people appreciate the time and effort you put in trying to help them.
What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?
I left sixth form with A levels and GCSEs and went to university. I quit university after 3 months and worked for nearly 2 years in my local B&Q store. After being offered an apprenticeship there and it not appealing to me, I decided to look elsewhere for another career path and found my role a FCC on GOV.UK I applied straight away. After some unsuccessful attempts with other employers, I was delighted to hear that after two interviews I had been offered the role of Apprentice Training Administrator.
What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector? Why is your current position better/ more satisfying?
I was interested in joining FCC as we are all about providing a better future for the world through waste management and how we turn waste into resources. My current position is really satisfying as the career opportunities within FCC are endless. I now work for a very flexible company that supports me in everything I do, surrounded by a great team and pushes me to further my career, bettering myself in everything I do.
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about helping people and I do that in my role every day. I have taken the skills I learnt while working for my previous employer and took them into this new role, developing them and learning new ones along the way.
What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?
I have been told and shown the potential career paths throughout FCC. It is a company that supports its employees to pursue a career in any sector of the business that piques their interest. As far as training goes, FCC encourages you to go on as many courses as you’d like. I have been on two external courses that helped my development and have used those skills in my everyday role, these were Assertiveness skills and Negotiation skills.
What does an average day consist of?
An average day consists of checking emails, recording training, teams call and filtering down spreadsheets to ensure that the correct data can be imported into the system. No two days are the same, as people throughout the business pop up with any issues they need resolving. As a home-based worker, it is nice to come into the office a couple of days a week to see everyone. This is also a way of networking throughout the business.
Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?
If I could recommend my job to a friend, I would do so. It is a role that allows you to learn all aspects of the business, and through that, networking with all types of different people, building relationships with those people which can benefit you in the long term. As well as this, FCC is a fantastic company to work for with plenty of benefits.
We hope you enjoyed reading about our Graduate’s journeys with FCC thus far and if joining FCC sounds like it is up your street, we would love to hear from you.
