Environmental Sciences graduate, Josh joined Ofgem through their graduate scheme after completing his Masters. Now working with their Policy team, read why he finds working in the energy sector exciting.

Tell us about your journey from starting out to your current role…

I did a bachelors degree in environmental sciences before moving into energy, policy and sustainable development at Masters level. I joined Ofgem as a graduate Policy Analyst right after my Masters through their graduate scheme. Ofgem is an energy regulator, based in Canary Wharf, London. My Policy Analyst position is my first full time role, however, I did several placements beforehand, mostly focused on sustainability, energy and climate change. As a graduate at Ofgem, I work on developing policy for a range of projects.

What attracted you to join the energy and utilities sector?

Working in the energy sector is particularly exciting at the moment, considering the amount of innovation and change we’re witnessing. The combination of climate change, new energy generating technologies, and ensuring everything works smoothly and affordably is a real challenge.

What does an average day consist of?

A standard day would be in the office, with a range of meetings and time to actually get some policy development done! We consult a lot with stakeholders so we often have bilateral workshops and conferences to share ideas.

What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?

I’m very ambitious and hopeful about my career prospects whilst at Ofgem, and beyond. The graduate scheme is excellent for training, with a bespoke course for getting up to speed with energy and regulation. The Civil Service generally is very good for training, with lots of promotion and support for improving various skills.

Which parts of the job do you find most rewarding?

I enjoy taking responsibility for developing policies that affect consumers, energy companies, and the wider energy sector. When policies get implemented after consultation stage, it is great knowing you are working on things that makes a genuine difference.

Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?

I’d recommend anyone to join the energy sector. It is central to dealing with many of the world’s problems at the moment and power is an essential good for all consumers. Knowing you’re working on something that carries such influence is really exciting.
