FCC
Laura spent the first 9 months on the Suffolk HWRC contract in Ipswich. As well as working with the contract team she had the benefit of working with a previous graduate who was awarded a permanent position within the Quarries Division.
When first starting with FCC, I had no idea how the waste industry operated, let alone what I would be learning on a daily basis.
The scheme allows you to lead your own learning, whilst progressing through your development plan. This allows you to explore the specific areas you enjoy in more detail.
There is fantastic support system including training and induction, weekly meetings with all the graduates and the head of training, and previous graduates still working within FCC who provide their own perspective.
I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of different aspects of the industry, I have:
- worked on site as a recycling operative to gain an understanding of how it works on the ground.
- performed an admin role to get an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes.
- worked with the Transport Manager and Drivers to develop up to date their risk assessments and safe working procedures.
- performed a project management role to install ANPR cameras onto all 11 sites.
- worked to help bring electronic versions of our paperwork to sites via iPad’s to help reduce the paper used.
All this, and so much more, happened in the first 5 months of the scheme!
After learning transfer stations operate, I went to work for a previous graduate who managed a Norfolk contract covering both recycling centres and transfer stations. It was especially interesting to compare how different councils operate the same service and see how different managers manage.
I have since moved onto the Suffolk Transfer Station contract as a site supervisor. This gives me more responsibility for managing a site.
The waste industry is ever changing and there will always be a need for it. This makes the Programme such a dynamic learning experiencing with lots of opportunities available.
