South East Water
Lewis started his apprenticeship a couple of years after finishing sixth form. After working for a few years he decided that pursuing an apprenticeship was the right path for him.
I am a graduate engineering technician at Southeast Water. Approximately 5 1/2 years ago, I joined the business as a Level 3 civil engineer apprentice, working in the minor works team on small maintenance and upgrade projects. Since then, I’ve completed my Level 3 diploma and embarked on a Level 6 engineering civil engineering technician degree. My focus now is on larger water treatment upgrades.
Currently, I allocate one day a week to my studies and personal and professional development. My goal is to become an incorporated engineer with the Institute of Civil Engineers in the next couple of years.
I began my apprenticeship a couple of years after finishing sixth form. Initially, I studied engineering at school, and during sixth form, I took a break to work for a couple of years. Eventually, I decided that pursuing an apprenticeship was the right path for me.
Despite occasional challenges, I’m genuinely enjoying my apprenticeship. I’m a strong advocate for apprenticeships—they offer brilliant opportunities. Anyone with a passion or interest in a field should seriously consider an apprenticeship. It’s a rewarding journey!
What’s been the biggest highlight of your apprenticeship so far?
It is personal development, not just your professional growth. When I look back five years ago to where I am now, I realize I’m more confident as a person in everyday life, as well as at work. This change can be attributed to how I’ve been working. Being part of a good team makes you feel like you truly fit in, both within the industry and the company.
