Liam is an Overhead Line Worker Apprentice, he really enjoys the hands on aspect of the job and getting to travel and work outside in all different environments. Find out more about why an apprenticeship works for him.

What do you do and where do you do it?

I work for Electricity North West as an Overhead Line Worker Apprentice, based in Stockport.

Why is your role important?

Electricity North West owns and operates the electricity network in the North West. We provide homes, businesses, hospitals and airports with the energy required to function every day. That’s why my role is so important, to ensure we keep the lights on for our customers. We work hard as a team to maintain and restore the network so electricity supply doesn’t’go off.

Which parts of the job do you enjoy most/ find most rewarding?

I really enjoy the hands on aspect of the job and getting to travel and work outside in all different environments, especially when you meet the customers and see how much they appreciate the service we provide.

What path did you use to get to the position you hold today?

Education was never my strong point as I’m a more hands on practical learner so I left college and went into paid work. I decided I wanted a new challenge so an apprenticeship seemed ideal for me, I just wish I had found it earlier.

What do you think of the career prospects? Have you had much training and development?

Over the next 3 years I will train and develop so that I will be competent enough to progress further within my role and the company. What that will be I am not sure yet, but through further training and support from my colleagues I’m sure I will progress on the path that’s best for me.

What does an average day consist of?

My days vary depending on what stage of training I’m at. I spend some days at the academy doing coursework for my qualification and practical workshops giving me the chance to practice the new skills I’m learning. At other times I will be out and about with my team gaining on-site experience and meeting the people connected to our network

Would you recommend your job to a friend and why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship scheme. So many of the people I have met and work with started as apprentices and they have received training and development throughout their careers at Electricity North West to be where they are today. Everyone is made to feel welcome within the business, everyone is friendly and it’s a great environment to work in.
