Monique started her shared apprenticeship scheme after trying university and realising it wasn't for her.

I’m currently completing a Level 4 project management shared apprenticeship scheme with K10. My journey is a little bit different, which is why I would like to touch on it this morning and explain why I chose this apprenticeship.

I’ve always been keen on apprenticeships because they incorporate learning on the job alongside education. However, due to COVID, it was difficult to secure an apprenticeship. Within a month, I decided to pack up my bags and move to university.

However, I quickly realized that university was not for me. I gave it a chance for a year but eventually dropped out towards the end. It simply wasn’t the right fit. I moved back home and worked at the airport while applying for apprenticeships in project management.

That’s when I stumbled across the shared apprenticeship scheme with K10. This unique scheme allows you to see the dynamics of both client and contractor sides in project management. It’s what drew me to this apprenticeship in the first place.

Instead of a traditional journey with Thames Water on the client side in the capital delivery team, I’ve recently moved to an AMP 7 contractor—Morrison Water Services. The apprenticeship has been two years long, splitting my time between one year with Thames Water and one year with Morrison’s. I wanted to share my journey because it’s never too late to start an apprenticeship.

What’s been the biggest highlight of your apprenticeship so far?

Having a good team around is crucial. I believe my team at Thames/MWS have been amazing, and the most significant reward for me has been witnessing my confidence grow. Colleagues have also noticed this positive change. When it comes to presenting, it can be quite daunting. However, practising and having the right people around you—offering tips and advice on various aspects of your apprenticeship—makes a significant difference. Overall, I find this to be the most rewarding aspect.
