After studying aero-mechanical engineering at Strathclyde university Noha joined the SSE graduate scheme in August 2018. She has chosen to pursue a career in the energy sector because it’s an industry that looks ahead to the future with a broad range of both existing and new emerging technologies.

Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate role and what made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?

The SSE graduate scheme allows you to contribute to a large variety of these technologies at various stages in development, giving an invaluable overview of the company and the energy sector as a whole. The opportunities available to the graduates are endless and the scheme allows you to tailor your learning and development, with a focus professional accreditation.

What are you enjoying in your role?

I’m enjoying being able to learn from highly experienced and skilled engineers from diverse backgrounds. It’s also great to be given responsibility and opportunities to contribute right away. Everyone is friendly and always willing to help out. Currently, I’m working in the Offshore Wind Design Development team, where I’m getting to learn about the detailed design that goes into planning new generation sites, well beyond the engineering.

What are you most looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to getting involved with more varied projects and technologies across SSE.

How did you find the recruitment process?

During the application process, everyone was very friendly and happy to provide guidance and support. I attended an Interconnect networking event for women in engineering at SSE, where details were given about the company and the graduate and internship schemes. This really helped to identify the kind of work and opportunities graduates are exposed to, and it highlighted how much SSE valued diversity through their efforts in promoting STEM careers to girls from school age. The previous graduates and staff provided a lot of guidance with regards to the application and assessment that graduates go through, which made the process much less daunting! Attending this event made the culture at SSE very evident and assured me that the company was for me.

Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programme?

My advice to those applying for graduate schemes is to ask as many questions as possible at any networking events or even just getting in touch with representatives and current graduates to find out what companies are really like to work for and if their scheme will suit you. It’s also a good idea to take advantage of any careers advice on offer at your university.
