Apprentice Fitter

Will has always been a hands on and practical person but after completing a college course in Agricultural engineering he was still undecided about his career. He then joined SP Energy Networks as an apprentice fitter and hasn't looked back.
I have always been a hands on and practical person – at school I studied BTEC vehicle technology L2 and I’ve always enjoyed tinkering about with cars! Coming from an agricultural background when I left school in 2015 I straight to college to study Agricultural Engineering. After completing this and still being undecided about my career I enrolled on a Level 3 BTEC Engineering Course which took me 2 years to complete.
Then in 2019, I joined SP Energy Networks as an Apprentice Fitter.
This involved spending time at college, the SP Energy Networks training centre and out on-site gaining experience, being trained by experienced Craftspersons. I recently completed my apprenticeship, 4 months early, passing with distinction which I’m really proud of.
A typical day
as a Fitter involves maintenance and repairs on high voltage switchgear within substations, battery changes, transformers, isolators, ring main units and circuit breakers. Living in North Wales I have also had the opportunity to work on fault restoration on the overhead line network. I have been multi-skilled and authorised so I can support the business when needed out of hours, particularly during storms, the most recent being Storm Barra.
Looking to the future
I would like to concentrate on my role as a Fitter and get more industry experience and learn my trade over the next few years. I then hope to progress to a role as a Technical Craftsperson to gain more experience on the high voltage network.
